Welcome to MathPro Inc.

MathPro
Inc. is a small consulting firm, founded in 1990, specializing in technical and economic analysis of the petroleum refining industry and related industries.  We are dedicated to producing sound, independent, and usable analysis of refining economics and of policy issues bearing on refining.  We are recognized as a source of objective, even-handed analysis and clear, understandable reports.

MathPro's principals, Dave Hirshfeld and Jeff Kolb, have extensive experience in the analysis of oil refining technology and economics, often through the use of computer-based refinery modeling.  In scores of studies – for public and private sector clients – they have analyzed regulatory, economic, and technical issues involving the refining industry in the U.S. and various parts of the world.  Many of these studies have produced widely-accepted estimates of the refining costs, investment requirements, and other consequences of federal and state policies and regulatory programs (including gasoline and diesel fuel sulfur control, federal and California RFG, MTBE bans, and ethanol mandates).

Our Specialties

MathPro's consulting practice focuses on:

  • Analysis of the refining economics of “clean fuels,” “renewable fuels,” and “climate change” regulations affecting gasoline, diesel fuel, and other refined products
  • Valuation of gasoline blendstocks – such as ethanol, bio-butanol, alkylate, iso-octane, iso-octene, and MMT – and diesel fuel blendstocks – such as F-T diesel and green diesel
  • Valuation of crude oils
  • Analysis of refinery energy use and CO2 emissions
  • Assessment of new refining process technologies
  • Economic analysis of the refining industry
  • Design and assessment of emissions credit trading programs
  • Development, modification, and enhancement of special-purpose linear programming modeling systems in the petroleum and process industries

MathPro is a leader in applying advanced modeling techniques to the analysis of refining operations and economics.

  • Our proprietary refinery modeling system (called ARMS) is a versatile analytical tool, comprising a linear programming (LP) model of refining operations, a collection of crude oil assays, operating data on refining processes, and a database of refinery configurations.
  • Our spread-sheet-based refining sector model covers each U.S. refinery and supports studies of refining industry cost functions, emissions credit trading programs, and crude oil netback pricing.

Our consulting experience and proprietary modeling capabilities enable us to conduct rigorous analyses, even in "quick response" engagements.  We are accustomed to hard problems, tight schedules, and limited budgets (preferably not all in the same project!).
