Welcome to MathPro Inc.'s Web site. We hope you find it interesting and useful, and we appreciate your interest in our firm.
MathPro Inc. is a small consulting firm specializing in energy economics, with a particularly strong capability in technical and economic analysis of the petroleum refining industry, transportation fuels, and bio-fuels. The firm, founded in 1990, is recognized for sound, independent analysis of refining economics. We have earned special recognition as a source of objective and widely-accepted estimates of the refining costs and investment requirements associated with federal and state clean fuels programs (including gasoline sulfur control, diesel fuel sulfur control (ULSD), federal RFG, California RFG, and other state programs) and with federal and state ethanol mandates.
MathPro's principals, Dave Hirshfeld and Jeff Kolb, have extensive experience in the analysis of oil refining technology and economics. They have carried out dozens of studies – for public and private sector clients – of regulatory, economic, and technical issues involving the refining industry in the U.S. and various parts of the world.
Our experience and advanced computing capabilities enable us to conduct rigorous analyses, often on a "quick response" basis.
We are accustomed to hard problems, tight schedules, and limited budgets.
MathPro's consulting practice focuses on:
- Analysis of the production and refining economics of bio-fuels
- Analysis of the refining economics of clean fuels regulations, such as gasoline sulfur control, diesel fuel sulfur control, federal and state reformulated gasoline programs, renewable fuels standards, MTBE phase-out, lead phase-out
- Economic analysis of the refining industry
- Litigation support and expert testimony regarding refining economics
- Design and assessment of emissions credit trading programs
- Valuation of crude oils
- Valuation of gasoline blendstocks and additives, such as ethanol, MTBE, iso-octane/iso-octene, alkylate, MMT
- Assessment of new refining process technologies
- Development, enhancement, and assessment of special-purpose linear programming modeling systems in the petroleum and process industries
MathPro is a leader in applying advanced analytical techniques to the analysis of refining operations and economics. Our proprietary refinery modeling system (called ARMS) comprises a linear programming model of refining operations, a library of crude oil assays, and a database of refinery configurations. ARMS is notable for its flexibility, advanced system design and extensive representations of refining technologies.
We also have a proprietary process flow model of refining operations, for "quick-and-dirty" economic studies and for crude oil netback pricing, and our own implementations of the EPA Complex Model and the California Predictive Model for RFG certification.
